University College London (UCL)
As Communications Manager for the Estates division I have held the strategic lead role to design and launch the new brand of Transforming UCL, the face of the major development scheme for the central campus of UCL. The project includes a range of infrastructure improvements and construction projects expected to top £ 1.3 bn over the next 10 years.
Within this role I have developed a range of communications strategies for the 45 live construction projects (of 200+ planned projects) taking place in the capital taking place whilst users are in occupation, including sensitive stakeholder liaison with various construction firms, PR Agencies and architects. This has included:
• The launch of 3 responsive websites supported by social and traditional media encouraging engagement with the student body (+30,000) and the wider community through outreach programmes from primary schools (sharing University collections) to urban art and graffiti projects for young adults.
• External PR liaison - lining up communications at strategic points in the project lifecycle whilst ensuring a steady stream of business as usual projects receive significant coverage.
• Intranet development and delivery to improve reporting, management and communications, including targeted newsletters for various groups.
• Running Public Engagement Events with various members of the community and with the student body aided by social and student media strategies across a range of accounts/groups to meet the needs of each project. Updates on all projects are linked via the Twitter feed and supported across the hundreds of official UCL Twitter channels.
• Overseeing communications at all levels from project brief through to completion for multiple projects, commissioning design work for use on multimedia displays, creative hoarding design for high-impact locations and a strong digital presence including large format printing and digital displays on buildings (billboards).
• Creating proactive and reactive communications strategies from confidential projects with sensitive government stakeholders to high profile, high cost but high yield glossy construction projects.
Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES)
As
Communications & Public Affairs Executive I ran a range of external communication projects to expand the company's presence during a successful rebranding campaign at the start of 2012. This involved liaising with external marketing consultants together with in-house negotiation to ensure continuity of service and a strong lead message. I was able to fully utilise my industry contacts in print, broadcast and digital media to incorporate the new message.
I devised a repositioning strategy to incorporate the new stakeholder 'footprint' and saturate the building sector from national to trade press to highlight what the rebranding meant in real terms both to existing members and to potential new customers.
Redesign & Re-launch - Notably I was able to use my online experience to redesign and launch the new website on a very tight time scale, for which I web managed the content and migration of data to the new site. Having worked for years in online publishing (from webmaster to project management) I was able to successfully unlock the website's potential not only new membership, but also improve the level of understanding within the business of the power of online through both SEO and regular analytics.
Customer Engagement - The new online strategy allowed the business to embrace new ways of improving its accountability such as through using webinars, which in turn raised the profile of the Association and improved it's public affairs credentials. Them increased interactive relationship between the Association and members resulted in a marked improvement in the quality of the feedback given to Government through 'calls for evidence', which was further supported through a successful social media campaign through the Linkedin community and using Twitter.
Throughout the rebranding process I maintained the 'business as usual' public relations of the Association with press briefings and releases.
I managed freelancers, external bloggers, and commissioned content for the trade and national press which also included ghost writing for the Chief Executive and President. I also launched a highly popular new 'renewables' forum to discuss sustainability best practice

Editorial control - I wrote daily online business news, including breaking numerous industry exclusive stories and kept abreast of developments in the construction industry. I wrote, subbed and produced magazine pages, commissioned content and deputised for the Editor where necessary.
Public Relations & Press Liaison for Events - I served as a public relations/press liaison for the conferences and events run by the publishing company which were held across the country, these included HEVAR and Sustainability Live. I worked with the sales team and account directors to produce copy to be included in marketing content on the sites and in the trade press. I produced and commissioned blogs to raise the profile of forthcoming events such as the Industry Awards (held once a year) which I fully supported from chasing RSVPs to editing the Awards speeches on the night. I also represented the company at trade fairs to facilitate sponsorship deals or further business opportunities.
Social Media/Web design - I created a successful social media online presence and began an extensive website re-design schedule to tackle existing issues with the content management systems (CMS), to incorporate additional multimedia within the sites. I also produced corporate messages to be used in weekly e-newsletters for subscribers, controlled circulation lists and the press.
